The surgical rotation is a 10-week rotation offered at five affiliated teaching hospitals. Students devote 65% of their time evaluating surgical patients in the allocated hospitals both inpatient and outpatient clinical settings. Students participate in 60 hours of didactic teaching and seminars.
Course objectives are concise and are distributed to students at the beginning of the rotation. Faculty members and academic surgical residents who participate in teaching are familiar with these objectives.
The breadth and depth of the surgical rotation are well-defined by the syllabus. The syllabus describes a broad array of diseases that a primary physician would normally encounter. Faculty instructions and supervision are commenced on a daily basis by bedside tutoring and case-based discussions. Each student receives feedback and reflective teaching based on real-life clinical encounters. Student questionnaires are also utilized by the course coordinator as a tool to monitor student educational experience across various clinical settings
