This course covers the etiology and symptomatology of cleft lip/palate and other orofacial anomalies in children. Assessment and treatment procedures in the medical and communication arenas will be addressed. The students will be exposed to a variety of assessment and treatment factors involved in the multidisciplinary care of patients with cleft lip/palate and craniofacial conditions. There will be a particular focus on the speech-language and hearing issues. Assessment of cleft palate speech including perceptual clinical evaluation and instrumental procedures like Nasometry, pressure-flow methodology, and flexible videonasoendoscopy will be emphasized. In Addition, students will practice with perceptual rating of hypernasality.
