Course Description
Course Description: Review the definition of Vernacular architecture and heritage and the history of its conservation and its evolution. Analysis of the planning process for the protection of historic areas and sites within the urban form of cities as part of its management. The importance of including historic areas and sites within the master plan of the city as sustainable development approach. Interpretation of the correlation of historic events and the value of historic sites. The integration between historic sites and their local communities. Interpretation and presentation of historic areas for the public as a socio-economic development issue. Course Outline: The course covers the theory and history of preservation movement and survey techniques for documentation of buildings and sites, intellectual and values assessment and categorization of buildings, preparation of documents and technical reports on conventional systems, preparation of case studies and critical analyses of the evaluation of selected local and regional examples of documentation and conservational decision making; and the preparation of conservation plans. Through a documentation project, class lectures and homework assignments, topics on heritage conservation will be presented and exercised. These topics will include advanced strategies like digital measuring and recording technologies, intervention levels and controls and performing conservation management through introducing investigation and assessment tools using experimental approaches and computer-based simulating tools. As a teaching method, the theoretical knowledge will be introduced to students through interactive lectures supported by visual illustrations and aides as needed. The practical training and performing tutorials will help in teaching the student the appropriate way of thinking, gathering and handling information. Course Goals & Objectives: - Introduce basic knowledge of theory and history of preservation movement at the international and national levels. - Develop student?s solid understanding of how strategies can be utilized in conservation through developing a practical framework based on theoretical lectures combined with practical project and homework assignments. - Offer to students? application for Conservation, with emphasis on methods of documentation and physical recording of heritage objects, buildings and sites - Help students to analyze the logic and the nature of heritage conservation - Exercise methods of evaluation in real projects - Create modified and advanced procedures to help overcome confronted challenges.
