This three-hour elective course introduces the principles and applications of analytical chemistry in forensic drug analysis, focusing on the screening, identification, confirmation, quantification, and interpretation of drugs, alcohol, metabolites, and other substances of forensic significance. Students explore analytical approaches for seized and unknown substances, major drugs of abuse, emerging psychoactive substances, and forensic samples from workplace, sports, drug-facilitated sexual assault, overdose, and postmortem investigations. Emphasis is placed on selecting appropriate analytical methods, interpreting instrumental and toxicological data, and understanding the capabilities and limitations of screening, confirmatory, quantitative, and rapid on-site techniques. Case-based activities and real-world forensic scenarios are used to apply analytical principles to forensic investigations.
