This Clinical course is designed to provide graduates with critical, analytical and integrative thinking skills to extend their problem solving and clinical decision-making abilities in providing pediatric care. This course exposes students to apply professional practice skills though direct care and contact with patients and their families through the application of advanced knowledge using advanced comprehensive pediatric assessment (through accurate physical assessment, pathophysiology, pharmacology, nutrition & feeding) to advanced nursing care of the child and family. Emphasis is placed on using models of practice in common pediatric problems. Implications of the developmental stage of the child and family, level of developmental skills and developmental problems for the maintenance of health and management of illness are discussed. The SOAP format is used and includes pertinent history, physical examination, laboratory findings and differential diagnosis relevant to the individual client. Focus is on development of a plan of care that encompasses the various treatment modalities used in managing common pediatric health problems including specific pharmaceutical and symptomatic treatment. Clinical practice opportunities are arranged in collaboration with the instructor and planned in a variety of pediatric settings.
