The aim of this course is to provide 3rd dental students with a basic knowledge of the clinical, histopathologic, and radiographic presentations (when applicable) of important diseases of the oral and maxillofacial regions, in addition to their pathogenesis.
The course covers developmental defects, non-carious abnormalities of teeth, pulpal and periapical disease, selected periodontal diseases, bacterial, fungal, protozoal and viral infections, physical and chemical injuries, allergies and immunologic diseases, and dermatologic diseases.
Each topic will have a practical session following completion of its lectures.
The practical session is in the form of PowerPoint presented clinical, radiographic and/or histopathologic images of cases. The students are encouraged and asked randomly to discuss each case and give a differential diagnosis.
This knowledge is expected to prepare them for clinical dentistry courses in their 4th and 5th years.
The course is complemented by Dent 356 Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology 2.
