This is one of the courses provided during the first semester by the Department of Applied Dental Sciences for undergraduate 2nd year students in the program of Allied Dental Science. The course is based on lectures, that topics are derived from the field of basic histology, oral histology & embryology and simplified to suit the level of dental hygienists and dental assistants. The lectures briefly cover the different stages of odontogenesis, details of tooth structure and its supporting tissues as well as the oral tissues and adjoining structures. The knowledge attained from those first lectures is significant for understanding the development of teeth and oral tissues. This course will familiarize the student with normal microscopic anatomy of the oral region. An in-depth knowledge of oral tissues and surrounding structures is essential to evaluate and treat disease processes encountered in dental hygiene practice.
