This course introduces Applied Dental Sciences students and Dental Technology students to basic knowledge of oral pathology. Through a combination of lectures, and interactive learning activities, students will explore the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, and management of common oral diseases and lesions encountered in dental hygiene practice.
This course aims to study pathology of oral mucosa, dental tissues and related structures. Students learn about the pathogenesis, etiology and presentation of a range of lesions that appear in the oral cavity and surrounding structures including teeth, oral mucosa and jawbones.
Congenital and developmental anomalies, dental caries, pulp diseases, periapical and periodontal diseases will all be studied. Additionally, the course discusses the cystic lesions and tumors that affect the jaws and perioral soft tissues. Other important oral connective tissue lesions and epithelial lesions, most importantly squamous cell carcinoma will be covered.
