Course Description
Provide a perspective on livestock management, transport and handling raised in close association with people. Aspects of animal handling are covered, such as handling for veterinary and husbandry procedures, stress physiology, restraint methods, transport, corral and stockyard design, handling at slaughter plants and welfare. Principles of animal behavior are covered for cattle, sheep, goats and poultry. Perception of the environment by farm animals and their physiological and productive responses. Behavioral and endocrine modulations resulting from animal-human interaction. Basic animal welfare strategies to minimize stress on productive states of food animals within the typically used animal production systems.
