This advanced physiology course introduces students in depth to three modules; namely membrane, muscular and cardiovascular systems. Membrane physiology module tackles transport of substances through animal cell membranes, and discusses membrane potentials and action potentials. Whereas muscular physiology module deals with mechanisms underlying contraction, neural excitation of skeletal and smooth muscles. Finally, the cardiovascular physiology module deals with physical and biological pumping of the heart chambers, rhythmical excitations of the heart and electrocardiographic interpretations, overview of circulation; physics of blood pressure, flow, resistance, vascular distensibility, capillary fluid exchange, local and humoral controllers of cardiac output and venous return.
