This course presents a comprehensive survey of what is known about language and of the methods used by linguists in arriving at that knowledge. The first lessons present some descriptive theories about the origin of a human language and its properties, moving to an investigation of articulatory phonology and the sounds used in English language with their phonetic symbols, in addition to using them in transcription. Once the foundation is laid, subsequent lessons explore a variety of topics related to word formation, morphology and grammar. In the last chapters, more critical views of language use are taken, such as syntax and semantics.
