Course Name ENG282 - Phonology
Course Description
This course builds on what students learn in Engl. Phonetics. A transition is made from what a sound is into how sounds pattern and behave in language. Patterning covers phonetic distribution and sound groupings into syllables while sound behavior considers the various phonological processes active in language. Suprasegmental phenomena such as stress and intonation are also discussed. To achieve these goals, the course will review basic phonetics, cover the notions of phone, phoneme and allophone, detail contrastive features, introduce phonological processes and natural classes, discuss syllable types and syllable structure, and lay down the basics of stress-assignment related terminology. The course takes on a traditional face-to-face in-class lecturing combined with pair and team-work where appropriate.
