This course is an introduction to pragmatics, the study of how people make sense of each other linguistically. In addition to defining the area of pragmatics, the course aims to explain and illustrate the basic and central concepts and theories in this field, namely reference and inference, deixis and distance, presupposition and entailment, cooperation and implicature, speech acts and events, and politeness and interaction. This course serves as a foundation for further study in this area of linguistics.
