This course is intended as an introduction to discourse and discourse analysis. It introduces the students to the key concepts in the field and provides them with an opportunity of exploring these concepts in use and how to make sense of discourse and text. It will cover several concepts including: the differences between discourse and text, differences between spoken and written language, cohesion and coherence, different views in discourse analysis, conversation analysis, information structure in discourse including information and thematic structure, genres, and rhetorical patterns. The course also aims to enable students to analyze the different types of discourse, spoken or written texts and to identify the different genres. The course thus provides foundation for further studies in other courses in linguistics like critical discourse analysis.
