Stylistics is concerned with exploring the language of texts. We will discuss how linguistic choices are often involved in the way readers understand and interpret texts. The course will focus on the language of fiction and the language of non-fiction, drawing on texts written by contemporary authors for different kinds of readers. The course also extends students' knowledge of linguistic concepts such as noun phrases, verb phrases, clauses, tense and modality. These topics are usually important for understanding point of view in literary narratives.
